Types of Corrugated Boxes Explained

Corrugated board is described by two things: how many layers it has, and the size of the flute between them. Getting both right is the difference between a carton that arrives intact and a damage claim.
Single wall (3 ply) board is one fluted layer between two liners. It covers the majority of retail and light shipping applications. Double wall (5 ply) adds a second fluted layer for heavier loads, longer transit and higher stacking. Triple wall (7 ply) is reserved for industrial loads and export consignments.
Flute grade controls cushioning and print surface. A and C flutes give the most cushioning and stacking strength. B flute is flatter and better for printing. E and F flutes are thin, used for mailer boxes and retail packaging where a smooth print surface matters more than cushioning.
Box style then determines assembly and cost. Regular slotted containers are the most economical for shipping. Roll-end tuck-front mailers assemble without tape. Telescopic styles suit produce and heavy goods. Die-cut custom structures are used where a standard style wastes space.
When specifying, work backwards from the load: product weight, stack height, transit distance and storage humidity. Those four inputs drive ply, flute and liner GSM more than any catalogue default.
