Custom vs Standard Packaging: What Industrial Buyers Should Know
28 June 2026
The instinct to customise everything is expensive. The instinct to standardise everything is also expensive. The right answer depends on volume, product geometry and how much void space a standard carton leaves.
Standard cartons win when volumes are low, products are broadly rectangular, and the packaging is not part of the customer experience. There is no tooling cost, lead times are short, and reorders are trivial.
Custom structures win when void space is significant, when product geometry is irregular, or when damage rates are already costing more than the tooling would. A die-cut structure that removes 20 percent of the shipped volume typically pays for its tooling within one season on any meaningful volume.
The middle path is a custom internal fitment inside a standard outer carton. This removes movement damage without paying for a fully bespoke shipper.
Ask your supplier for a landed-cost comparison, not a unit price comparison. Unit price ignores freight, damage and warehouse space — which is where most of the real money sits.
